The one thing that I noticed while watching Wicked (which was awesome by the way) is that the rumors about gay men and musical theater are true- they absolutely love it. We were sitting in front of two black gay guys who had clearly been to see the play enough times to be sitting there singing along with the words. We were also sitting behind a group of about six gay men, two of which decided that intermission was a good time to start scamming (kissing/making out) and since I'm not a fan of souvenirs, standing in long lines at the bathroom, overpriced/high fat snack foods, or teasing my legs by stretching before it's actually time to go- I was stuck sitting about 14 inches from these guys that looked like they were having fore-fore-play.
Disclaimer: I am the most liberal person that you ever met. Seriously, always have been and always will be. So imagine how conflicted I felt when I started feeling extra disgusted by these guys kissing in front of me. I felt so bad! Mind you, I hate PDA in general. Man, woman, child, gay or straight- PDA is disgusting and I'm quite convinced that instead of stupid discriminating legislation like Prop 8 is trying to pass, we should have a prop about outlawing PDA by all people if anything.
However, the more I kept trying to reassure myself that the disgust I felt was because I generally don't like PDA, the more I knew that I was lying to myself. So I talked to my friend Kim on Friday because I was seriously upset over the entire thing and had been thinking about it for the last 3 days. I explained the situation to her and my question to her was: Am I prejudiced?
Kim worked with very "flaming" gay men for years and she's spent a lot of time with gay men. I was very relieved when she told me that, it's natural to feel that way if I've never really been around gay people like that. Which makes so much sense because if I saw a young white girl making out with an old white man I'd probably be just as disgusted, if not more and it's not because I don't think young people should date old people (I could care less) but I've never really seen that happen before.
Thanks Kim.
Everyone else, go see Wicked!
